What Is an ACH Return Code

An ACH return code is a specific code used to indicate the reason a payment in the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network was returned or rejected. When an ACH payment is initiated, it travels through the ODFI (Originating Depository Financial Institution) and is processed by the RDFI (Receiving Depository Financial Institution)

If there is an issue with the payment, such as incorrect account information or insufficient funds, the RDFI will return the payment with a corresponding ACH return code.

These codes, governed by NACHA (National Automated Clearing House Association), help identify the exact reason for the return, ensuring proper communication between financial institutions and facilitating the resolution of errors in ACH payments.
