ACH Return Code R52

ACH Return Code R52

ACH Return Code R52 means a Stop Payment was placed on a check re-submitted as an RCK entry, helping avoid processing errors and unnecessary fees.

ACH Return Code R52 indicates a Stop Payment has been placed on an item related to an RCK (Re-presented Check Entry). This means the account holder previously requested a stop payment on a check that was later re-submitted electronically through the ACH network.

Understanding this return code helps for properly handling check re-presentments and avoiding unnecessary fees or confusion.

What Is an ACH Return Code

In ACH payments, a return code is a standardized way to indicate why a transaction processed through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network failed.

These codes are managed by NACHA and help both the Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI), which sends the payment, and the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI), which receives it, understand the reason for the failure—such as insufficient funds, a closed account, or incorrect account details.

When a transaction doesn't go through, the RDFI sends a return entry along with the specific return code to the ODFI. This process ensures clear communication and helps resolve the issue efficiently.

What Is ACH Return Code R52

ACH Return Code R52 is a specific code used in the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network to indicate that a stop payment order has been placed on a check that was re-presented as an RCK (Re-presented Check Entry)

This typically happens when a check that was previously returned due to insufficient funds is submitted again electronically for payment. If the account holder had already requested a stop payment on the original check, and that instruction still applies, the receiving bank (RDFI) will return the transaction using code R52.

This code helps ensure that re-presented checks are not processed against the wishes of the account holder, maintaining proper authorization and control over check payments.

How to Fix ACH Return Code R52

To fix ACH Return Code R52, first confirm whether a valid stop payment order was placed on the original check by the account holder. If the stop payment is legitimate, the Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI) should not attempt to re-submit the RCK entry. In such cases, the payee may need to contact the check writer to resolve the issue through alternative payment methods.

If the return was due to a misunderstanding or error, the account holder may need to remove or update the stop payment with their bank, and the transaction can then be processed again if appropriate.
