What Is an ACH Return Code

In ACH payments, a return code is a standardized reason that explains why a transaction was not processed through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network.

These codes are essential for both the Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI), which initiates the payment, and the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI), which processes the payment, as they help identify and understand the underlying issue causing the failure.

Return codes are governed by NACHA, the organization that manages the ACH network, ensuring consistency and clarity across all transactions. Common reasons for return codes include issues like insufficient funds, closed accounts, incorrect account details, or unauthorized transactions

What Is ACH Return Code R62

ACH Return Code R62 is used to indicate the Return of Erroneous or Reversing Debit. This code is applied when a debit entry that was intended to reverse a previous transaction is found to be incorrect, leading to its return.

It typically arises in situations where a reversing or correcting debit is processed but contains errors such as duplication or an improper execution of the reversal.

How to Fix ACH Return Code R62

To fix ACH Return Code R62, first review the original transaction that triggered the erroneous or reversing debit. Ensure that the reversal was correctly initiated and that there are no duplicates or processing errors. If the reversal was improperly executed, it may need to be re-submitted with accurate details.

Contact the Receiving Depository Financial Institution (RDFI) for clarification if necessary, and verify that the account details, including account number and routing number, are correct. After identifying the source of the error, the Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI) should initiate a new, corrected transaction to resolve the issue. In cases where a transaction was mistakenly reversed, the ODFI may need to re-submit the original debit with the correct information.
