What Is an ACH Return Code

In ACH payments, ACH return codes are standardized indicators used when an ACH transaction fails. They provide clear explanations for why a payment was rejected or returned, helping to quickly diagnose and resolve issues.

Each code points to a specific reason—such as insufficient funds, invalid account details, or unauthorized activity—allowing both the Originating and Receiving Depository Financial Institutions (ODFI and RDFI) to identify the problem.

Regulated by NACHA, these codes ensure consistency and efficiency across the ACH Network, making issue resolution more straightforward for all parties involved.

What Is ACH Return Code R82

ACH Return Code R82 indicates that an ACH payment could not be completed because the foreign receiving Depository Financial Institution (DFI) identification is invalid. This typically occurs when an International ACH Transaction (IAT) includes incorrect or unsupported identification details for the foreign bank that is supposed to receive the funds.

Since ACH transactions must follow specific formatting and routing rules, any mismatch or error in the foreign DFI information prevents the transaction from being processed. As a result, the payment is returned with the R82 code to alert the originating institution of the issue, allowing them to correct the information and attempt the transaction again if needed.

How to Fix ACH Return Code R82

To fix ACH Return Code R82, the originating party should carefully review the payment details, specifically the foreign receiving bank’s identification information. The error usually stems from an incorrect or improperly formatted DFI identifier, which must align with ACH Network standards for international transactions.

Verify the correct routing or identification number with the foreign financial institution. Once the accurate information is obtained, the transaction can be corrected and resubmitted.
